As facilitators, we take responsibility for noticing, navigating, and, where appropriate, bringing a groups’ attention to the dynamics and roles playing out in the room.
These dynamics and roles often take place ‘below the waterline’, meaning that they are not being noticed, acknowledged, or addressed. We are not immune to this: as facilitators, we are also playing out dynamics and roles in the room that we might not be aware of.
On top of this, we are living in chaotic and changing times. This can affect our clients’ nervous systems and ability to self-regulate, and how open they are to facilitation, feedback, and change. As facilitators, these times are also likely affecting our nervous systems, our ability to self-regulate, and how well we can hold the facilitation role.
Combined, this can all put immense pressure on the processes and outcomes of a discussion or event.
Inspired by therapist peer-support groups, Facilitation Pods offers facilitators an intimate space in which to bring their current experiences with clients, so that, together, we can investigate what dynamics and roles are playing out in the room.
Come And Join Us
You’re warmly invited to join the first cohort of the Facilitation Pods.
Starting this September, the first three months are hosted by me, on behalf of Open Facilitation.
As a participant, you’ll have access to:
2 x 1.5 hour online, hosted peer-reflection sessions per month (maximum size per group of 6).
the Facilitation Pods Slack group, with access to common channels and private channels just for your pod.
a small group of practising facilitators (maximum of 6 per pod) that will learn your facilitation blindspots, strengths, challenges, and hopes.
a welcoming space for our unique perspectives, skills, experiences, and facilitation approach.
building and stewarding a commons together: after the first three months of pod facilitation and organisation by me, the commons will decide how to move forwards in relation to further organisation, facilitation, and fees.
a shared space where we centre care, appreciation, and joy for facilitation as an important role, and a shared awareness of the responsibility we choose to carry.
Making the Invisible, Visible
The role of the facilitator is a necessarily weighty one. We have the means to radically affect the experience of group members and the outcome of a meeting or event.
Together, we can help each other to make the invisible, visible, so that we can become more responsible and responsive facilitators.
